The following snippet gets the next letter in the alphabet given the input character. Replace the alpha-string with uppercase or any other sequence of characters if needed. 

#!/bin/perl

my $input = 'd';
my $output = &NextChar($input);
print "$output follows $input\n";

sub NextChar {
	my $char = shift;
	my $alpha = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz";
	$alpha =~ m/$char/;
	my $charpos = $-[0];
	my $nextchar = ($char eq 'z' ? 'a' : substr($alpha, $charpos + 1,1));
	return $nextchar;
}
